Ahead of the upcoming one-off Test against England, the Indian men’s cricket team is engaged in a four-day warm-up match against English county side Leicestershire. On the final day of the game, it was the hosts' turn to bat as they came out to chase down the target of 367 runs against the Indian team.
And like in the first innings, where as many as four Indian players appeared for the county side, in the second one as well, a couple of Indian batters came out to bat against India. Young opening batter Shubman Gill was one of them as he came out to bat for the third time in the four-day match. But on Sunday, he faced an injury scare when he was hit on the forearm by Indian fast-bowler Mohammed Siraj.
But he didn’t leave the ground and, after getting some treatment, was up for the task and responded in style by smashing the Indian bowler for a six on the next ball he faced. In the second innings, the right-handed batter scored 62 runs from 77 balls. His innings was laced with eight fours and two sixes.
Shubman’s availability is very important for India against England especially after his opening partner and Indian skipper Rohit Sharma’s positive COVID-19 test.
The Indian captain, who is set to lead the team in the one-off Test against the Ben Stokes-led side from July 1 in Birmingham, tested positive for COVID-19 following a Rapid Antigen Test (RAT) conducted on Saturday. The BCCI, via a tweet, informed that the 35-year-old is currently in isolation at the team hotel and is under the care of the BCCI Medical Team.
In Rohit’s absence on Sunday (June 26), his deputy, Jasprit Bumrah, led the Indian team. If Rohit fails to get fit for the game, then the star pacer is likely to captain India in the one-off Test.
