Bollywood filmmaker Anurag Kashyap has been making the headlines lately for his opinion on several ongoing debates and burning issues inside the film industry. The director, who is currently busy promoting his movie Dobaaraa featuring Taapsee Pannu in the lead role, recently opened about his movie Bombay Velvet and its failure at the box-office.
Anurag Kashyap also opened up about why Ranveer Singh was being dropped from the movie and called this industry “ajeeb si jagah” (weird place).
While speaking to a publication during one of the promotional activities of Dobaaraa, the Gangs of Wasseypur director revealed that the budget of Bombay Velvet was “not controlled” and blamed himself for “not fighting” for the same.
Anurag told PinkVilla, “Films don’t go as wrong as choices of budget goes. That film should have been made at the budget it was intended at, the way it was originally intended, and that didn’t happen. Nobody is to be blamed except me, because I didn’t fight for it enough. At the time, we were in such a transitional phase where I was listening to people who call themselves experts of this industry, it was made according to how industry experts suggested, and all these big experts failed collectively. I believe, it is my failure of course, but it is also failure for all these big industry experts.”
He further talked about Ranveer Singh being dropped from the movie and said, “Ranveer was dropped because the industry thought he would not be able to drive the money in. But today, they themselves are making films with him. So, this industry is ajeeb si jagah. The consequences are mine and so I immediately switched places where I am happy, making films with a small, controlled budget.”
After Ranveer Singh was dropped, Ranbir Kapoor was signed for Bombay Velvet opposite Anushka Sharma. The movie also starred filmmaker Karan Johar and the movie turned out to be a disaster at the box-office.
