Chennai: Two new bus terminuses may soon come up on the outskirts of Chennai. The Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) has identified Mamallapuram and Chengalpet as the two locations where the new terminuses will be built.
For this, the CMDA has floated bids in Public Private Partnership (PPP) mode.
Around 22 acres at these locations in the outskirts of the city have been identified for the terminuses that will have commercial spaces, terminal buildings, bus bays, parking spaces, bus depots, and fuel stations.
The facility at Chengalpet is set to come up on the empty land in the vicinity of the government medical college hospital.
Earlier in June this year, when housing minister C Muthusamy made the announcement, around 40 families opposed the construction citing that they have been living in the plot for 30 years. However, the Chengalpet collectorate said that the families had no pattas.
The collectorate also ensured that other encroachments too have been removed from the land.
Meanwhile, the proposed terminus at Mamallapuram is said to focus on facilitating tourists and visitors, especially those travelling from central and southern districts.
Moreover, TNSTC (Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation) Villupuram is planning to run more conductor-less point-to-point buses once the facility in Mamallapuram becomes functional.
As per the bid documents released by CMDA two weeks ago, a consultant will be roped in to come up with a Detailed Project Report (DPR), feasibility study report, and financial and business model.
The bids will be finalised in five months. Meanwhile, the Kilambakkam bus terminus in Chennai is yet to open for public use.
