Thiruvananthapuram: In a shocking incident in the state capital of Kerala, a 70-year-old ex-serviceman reportedly set a husband and wife on fire over a rivalry that lasted 29 years. The accused Sasidharan Nair, hailing from Kilimanoor of the district, attacked the victims with a hammer before setting them on fire in the Madavoor area near Pallickal of Thiruvananthapuram.
According to reports, the murdered Prabhakara Kurup (60) was an accused in a case related to the death of Sasidharan Nair's son. After a long legal battle, Kurup was acquitted by the court on Friday. Enraged by the verdict, Nair reportedly reached Kurup's home and picked up a fight with him.
Prabhakara Kurup was called out of the house by the accused and later entered a war of words with him, The New Indian Express (TNIE) said in a report. The argument soon escalated into a physical brawl and Kurup's wife Vimala Kumari (55) tried to break up the fighting men. Nair hit both the husband and the wife on the head with a hammer and set them ablaze using petrol he had brought with him, the daily added.
While Prabhakara Kurup died on the way to the hospital, Vimala Kumari breathed her last in the evening. Sasidharan Nair is also being treated for burn injuries he suffered while committing the crime, TNIE reported.
Almost 30 years back, Kurup had arranged a job visa for Nair's son. However, after taking up the job in Bahrain, the youngster learnt that it was not the kind of job he was looking for. This reportedly pushed him into depression and later suicide, the report said.
