Bhubaneswar: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Wednesday predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall in several districts of Odisha in the next five days as a low-pressure is likely to form over North Bay of Bengal soon.
In a notification, the Met department said that a cyclonic circulation lies over south Myanmar and neighbourhood and extends upto 5.8 km above mean sea level. Under its influence, a low-pressure area is likely to form over North Bay of Bengal around August 19, it added.
The IMD also issued a yellow warning of heavy rainfall in 20 districts and an orange alert of very heavy rains in 17 districts of the state.
"Light to moderate rain very likely to occur at most places over districts of the state in next 5 days. Heavy to very heavy rainfall very likely to occur over Nuapada, Bolangir, Jharsuguda, Sundargarh, Sambalpur, Bargarh, Sonepur, Kalahandi districts," said IMD, Bhubaneswar.
The government has advised fishermen not to venture into the sea in north and west central Bay of Bengal on Friday and off the coast on Saturday as squally weather with wind speed of 45-55 km per hour is expected over the region, officials said.
The flood situation in the Mahanadi system in the state remained grim on Wednesday as the river water continued to swell due to heavy rainfall triggered by a depression over the past week, which has marooned 1.5 lakh people in 237 villages.
The first flood of the season has affected over two lakh people in 10 districts, while more than 27,000 people have been evacuated and moved to temporary shelters.
