Saharanpur: Anurag Thakur, the Union Minister for Sports, announced on Tuesday that he had ordered the Uttar Pradesh government's Sports department to take strict action against the contractors and officers who are suspected of hiding food intended for Kabaddi players competing in a Saharanpur event inside a bathroom.
In Saharanpur, a sports stadium's bathroom complex had a large plate of cooked rice on the floor. Since Saturday, images showing the rice plate placed on the toilet's floor have circulated on social media.
A junior player who wished to remain unnamed said that the cooked rice was later served to approximately 200 participants in a three-day state-level U-17 girls' kabaddi tournament.
Initially, Saharanpur sports officer Animesh Saxena denied the accusations and called them "baseless" after the pictures appeared on social media. "The food served to tournament participants here is of high quality," said Saxena.
The junior player added that the food, which included rice, 'dal', and 'sabji', was prepared in a traditional brick oven close to the swimming pool in big pots.
The player claimed that "the cooked rice was taken out of the vessel in a large plate and was placed on the toilet floor near its gate."
On a piece of paper on the floor next to the rice plate, leftover "pooris" were also kept. The players were then given the rice for lunch on Friday, according to a player.
