One of the OG Avengers, Chris Hemsworth first appeared in the character of Thor in 2011 and has been playing it ever since. To the delight of his fans, Chris Hemsworth is resuming his role as Thor in Thor: Love and Thunder, and he has stated that this may be his final Marvel production, but that if presented with the opportunity, he would love to continue portraying him.
Kenneth Branagh directed Hemsworth in his first role as the God of Thunder in Thor. While the film wasn't a box office hit, Hemsworth's depiction of the hero was well received. In The Avengers, he joined forces with the remainder of the MCU. After that, he appeared in Thor: The Dark World and Avengers: Age of Ultron as the superhero.
Thor: Ragnarok reinterpreted the character of Thor in 2017. Under the helm of Taika Waititi, he developed into a more comedic and vulnerable character. This version of the superhero became popular, and he continued to play it in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame.
Thor: Ragnarok is the fourth instalment in the Thor film franchise. The superhero has become the first Avenger to receive a fourth film, although it may be Hemsworth's final appearance in the role. Chris Hemsworth stated in an interview with Wired that this could be his final appearance as Thor in a Marvel film. He does admit, though, that if fans would like him to continue, he is willing to come back.
“Well the last [Marvel movie] I shot was Thor: Love and Thunder and it might be my last Marvel movie, I don’t know,” Hemsworth shared. “It was a wild and fun and wacky experience, as all Taika Waititi movies are. Played that character for ten, eleven, years now, and each time it’s been new and exciting, and this was no exception to that. It felt very fresh and it felt like we were trying something we hadn’t tried before. I was, in Taika’s words, I think a wacky, wild, romantic comedy set in space… I love playing Thor – played it for many many years and would continue to do so if people wanted me to. The most challenging part of playing Thor is reinventing it each time and not having it be predictable for an audience and having it be something they’ve seen before… And that is a challenge but part of the fun.”
Thor: Love and Thunder is helmed by Taika Waititi yet again, and Chris Hemsworth reprises his role as the protagonist who is now on a search for peace following an emotional rollercoaster in the previous films. Tessa Thompson will reprise her role as Valkyrie, Waititi will reprise his role as Korg, and Natalie Portman will return as Jane Foster/ Mighty Thor.
The Guardians of the Galaxy will also appear in this quest, as will Christian Bale as Gorr the God Butcher, who will play a villain. On July 8, Thor: Love and Thunder will be released theatrically.
