Chennai: Heavy rain is expected in Chennai and the surrounding regions on Monday, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). On Sunday night, the city was hit by a torrential downpour that flooded multiple streets in less than two hours. Meenambakkam had 3mm of rain, while Nungambakkam received roughly 30mm.
According to the IMD, the heavy rain on Sunday indicated additional thunderstorms in Chennai and its suburbs in the following days, aside from the potential of heavy rainfall on Monday.
A persistent spell of rain began as a drizzle at 8 pm but subsequently evolved into heavy showers late into the night due to upper air circulation.
Winds shifted to the westerlies, resulting in thunderstorms across the city and suburbs, according to weather models.
The rain on Sunday, according to private weather bloggers, could be a warning that more thunderstorms are on the way in the following days reported TOI.
The rain has offered relief from Chennai's sweltering heat.
