North Korea Fires Ballistic Missile With ‘Range To Reach US’: Korean Peninsula ‘On The Brink Of War’?

North Korea has fired what Japan claims to be an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) on November 18 capable of carrying a nuclear warhead with a range to reach the mainland of the United States. Japanese Defence Minister Yasukazu Hamada said the weapon, which was capable of travelling as far as 15,000km, landed in the country’s exclusive economic zone. This is the second ICBM to be tested by Pyongyang this year amid unprecedented missile fires ‘in response’ to South Korea and the United States’ largest-ever military and air drills. The current missile test comes as leaders of South Korea, Japan and the US are meeting at the APEC summit. How will the US and its allies in the Indo-Pacific region respond to Kim Jong Un’s ICBM? Is the Korean Peninsula on the ‘brink of war’?
