Australia blew away India in the first T20I in Mohali, however, more than the result, it was the expressions of the Indian skippers, former and current that stole the limelight. Whether Virat Kohli being taken aback by Cameron Green's power-hitting in the powerplay or Rohit getting frustrated with Indian bowlers leaking runs, there were expressions that caught cameraman's eye. However, the one that will stay in everyone's memory will be when Rohit grabbed Dinesh Karthik during a DRS call.
Pacer Umesh Yadav had his tails up having dismissed the set batter Steve Smith in the over and a couple of balls later, he accounted for Glenn Maxwell's wicket. A slower short ball from Umesh foxed Maxwell, who could just edge it to the wicket-keeper. The ball dipped on Karthik, but he managed to grab it. The bowler and keeper both were confident as they asked Rohit to go for the review.
Rohit went for the call instantly and asked Karthik, "Tune catch pakda hai na (You have caught the ball cleanly)?" As the players were waiting for the result, Rohit was seen indulging in a banter with Karthik as he made faces at him first before holding his face during a fun banter. The pictures of the same went viral on the internet becoming meme templates.
Speaking to the press on the eve of the second T20I about the same, Surya said that both have played alongside each other for so long, this much banter is usual. "Rahi baat wo DRS ki toh kabhi kabhi peeche tak awaz jati nahi hai aur left and right mein acche se awaz ati hai edge ki aur unka wo alag hi banter hai, itne saalo se jante hai ek dusre ko aur ek saath itna khela hua hai toh itna toh hasi mazak thoda banta hai (Speaking of that DRS, you don't hear the edges clearly from behind the stumps at times but you do from the right or left side of the field. And that was their banter. They know each other for such a long time and have played a lot of cricket together so those kind of moments between the two are normal)," he said.
When asked about Rohit's several expressions of frustration during the match, Surya said, "Field pe itna pressure hota hai ki har situation mein kya karna hai toh aisa ho jata hai kabhi kabhi (These things happen on the cricket field because at times there is a lot of pressure.)"
Surya credited the Australian batters for chasing down 55 runs in the last four overs when asked about India's death bowling woes. The stylish batter said that they haven't had time to sit properly since that game since the match went long and they had a travel day on Wednesday but hoped that India respond well in Nagpur on Friday.
