Gum pains could result from several problems in the gum and tooth and there need not be one single reason for the condition. The severity of the condition might also differ for different people, some might feel a slight tingling sensation in their gums while others might get a swollen gum.

  1. Mouth ulcers: Also known as canker sores, these are extremely painful and they can appear in the gums as well as in several other parts of the mouth. There’s no known cause for this condition and it can be caused due to a bacterial or viral infection.
  2. Burns: Sometimes, you might eat hot food and burn your gums. This damages the tissues and causes the pain. However, let the area heal and don’t irritate with aggressive brushing.
  3. Oral cancer: When you have a sore on your gums or tongue or anywhere in the mouth, that does not heal in two or three weeks, get it checked by a doctor as it could be a sign of oral cancer and avoiding it might turn out to be fatal.
  4. Tobacco: Smoking or chewing tobacco can lead to pain in the gums as they tend to damage your gums. This damage might result in the pain.
  5. Aggressive brushing and flossing: It is important that you brush and floss everyday, however, when it becomes aggressive, it can irritate your gums and cause pain in the gums.
