Bengaluru (Karnataka): Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai on Thursday supported Kannada actor Kichcha Sudeep over the Hindi row, saying everyone should understand and respect what he said.
“Our stand regarding mother tongue is clear. The issue has been addressed at the times of formation of states on the basis of the language. Regional languages are supreme. All should accept it and respect it, Kichcha Sudeep has said the same,” the chief minister said.
It all started with Sudeep's statement a few days ago during a function in Bengaluru where he said Hindi is no more a national language. Following this, Bollywood actor Ajay Devgn took to Twitter and wrote, “Hindi was, is and always will be our mother tongue and national language.”
“Kiccha Sudeep, my brother, according to you, if Hindi is not our national language then why do you release your native language (mother tongue) films by dubbing them in Hindi? Hindi was, is and always will be our mother tongue and national language. Jan Gan Man,” he wrote in Hindi.
The friendly conversation between the two actors took a political turn with top political leaders joining the debate.
Former Karnataka chief ministers Siddaramaiah and HD Kumaraswamy also insisted that Hindi is like any other language in India and not the national language.
“Hindi was never and will never be our national language. It is the duty of every Indian to respect the linguistic diversity of our country. Each language had its own rich history for its people to be proud of. I am proud to be a Kannadiga,” Siddharamaiah tweeted tagging Ajay Devgn.
Kumaraswamy said, “Hindi is just one among the languages of the nation like Kannada, Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam and Marathi. India is a garden of many languages. The attempts to disturb the diversity should not be made.”
