After linking Ukrainian President Zelensky to Adolf Hitler, Russia now accuses Israel of backing 'neo-Nazis'

The remarks had first been made during an interview with the Russian lawmaker, with Lavrov claiming that Zelensky "puts forward an argument of what kind of Nazism can they have if he himself is Jewish".

Moscow: As the Ukraine-Russia war rages on, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov had recently linked Ukranian President Volodymyr Zelensky to German dictator Adolf Hitler, sparking off a furious war of words with Israel. Adolf Hitler, he had suggested, may have "had Jewish blood". Moscow has since doubled down on its claim, accusing Israel of supporting "the neo-Nazi regime in Kyiv".
"We have paid attention to Foreign Minister Yair Lapid's anti-historical remarks, which largely explain the current government's decision to support the neo-Nazi regime in Kyiv. History unfortunately knows tragic examples of cooperation between Jews and Nazis," said the Russian foreign ministry in a statement.
A day earlier, Israeli Foreign Minister Yair Lapid had condemned Lavrov for making an "unforgivable and outrageous statement as well as a terrible historical error" and summoned Moscow's ambassador seeking "clarifications" over the same.
"Jews did not murder themselves in the Holocaust. The lowest level of racism against Jews is to accuse Jews themselves of antisemitism," he said.
Prime Minister Naftali Bennett also denounced Lavrov's "lies" that he said effectively "accuse the Jews themselves of the most awful crimes in history", perpetrated against themselves.
The remarks had first been made during an interview with the Russian lawmaker, with Lavrov claiming that Zelensky "puts forward an argument of what kind of Nazism can they have if he himself is Jewish".
"I could be wrong, but Hitler also had Jewish blood," he had then gone on to add according to a transcript of the interaction that was posted on the Russian foreign ministry website.
