Indian athletes Eldhose Paul and Abdulla Aboubacker Narangolintevid may not have been the most famous names going into the Commonwealth games 2022, but now they have etched their names in history. In the men's triple jump event, both athletes finished with a medal each, becoming the first ones to earn a Commonwealth Games medal in men's triple jump for India.
While Eldhose Paul created history to become the first Indian gold medallist at the event, Aboubacker also became the first Indian athlete to pick up the silver medal at the event. The two Indian triple jumpers were the only ones to breach the 17 m mark at the event. While Paul recorded a best jump of 17.03 m, Aboubacker's best jump was of 17.02 metres.
Eldhose Paul started off on a shaky note, registering his first jump of 14.62m, which was well below the desired mark. However, he jumped his best distance of 17.03 m in his third attempt, thus becoming the first man in this year's event to cross the 17 m mark. In fact, this jump propelled him from the fourth position straight into the gold medal spot and he didn't drop from the position since.
Abdulla Aboubacker Narangolintevid, on the other hand, was consistently hitting the 16m mark but was unable to solidify his spot in one of the medal positions till his fifth attempt when he finally hit a distance of 17.02 m.
Another Indian triple jumper Praveen Chitravel just missed out on a podium finish as he ended up in fourth position. In fact Chitravel was just 0.03m short of the eventual bronze medallist Jah-Nai Perinchief of Bermuda.
