England's white-ball captain Eoin Morgan brought an end to his illustrious international career on Tuesday (June 28) by announcing his retirement from international cricket. Morgan, who led England to their maiden 50-over World Cup triumph in 2019 on home soil, is regarded as one of the greatest ever English cricketers.
Morgan's legacy is defined by his captaincy which saw him become England's first and only captain till date to lift the 50-over World Cup trophy. The left-handed batter was also part of the Paul Collingwood-led England side which won the Three Lions' first-ever ICC trophy by lifting the 2010 T20 World Cup Trophy in West Indies.
The 35-year-old is widely credited for changing England's approach in white-ball cricket which saw them play a very exciting and aggressive brand of cricket which earned them plaudits from cricket lovers across the globe. While Morgan will go down as one of the finest captains in the history of the sport, his legacy and records with the bat is one that will see him be remembered as one of England's finest. 1) Most ODI runs and appearances.
Having played 225 ODIs for England, Eoin Morgan has the most appearances in ODI cricket for the one-time World Champions. Morgan has played 27 matches more than second-placed Paul Collingwood (197) and 30 more games than James Anderson (194) .
With a tally of 6957 runs, Morgan is England's all-time highest run-scorer in the 50-over format. Alongside Joe Root (6109), he is only one of two England cricketers to have scored more than 6,000 runs in ODI cricket.
2) Most T20I runs and appearances
Like in ODI cricket, Morgan also holds the record of scoring the most runs and making the most appearances in T20I cricket for England. The former England captain has scored 2458 runs in 115 matches for England. Morgan is the only English player to play more than 100 matches in the shortest format. With 2140 runs in 88 matches, Jos Buttler is second in both lists.
3) Most succesful captain in ODI and T20I cricket
As far as captaincy goes, Morgan's legacy is far greater than any numbers will show but he holds the distinction of being England's succesful captain in both white-ball formats. The left-handed batter has led England to 76 and 42 wins in ODI and T20I cricket respectively. He holds a comfortable lead over second-placed Alastair Cook (36) and Collingwood (17) respectively.
4) Most ODI and T20I sixes for England
During his peak as a batter, Morgan was one of the finest power-hitters in world cricket. This is exhibited by the fact that he holds the distinction of scoring the most number of sixes in both ODI and T20I cricket for England in history. Morgan hit a total of 115 maximums in 50-over cricket while smashing 120 big hits in the shortest format of the game.
5) Second most ODI Centuries
With 13 ODI centuries to his name, Eoin Morgan has the second-most ODI centuries by an English batter in history. Joe Root leads the list with 16 tons in the 50-over format. Morgan had upstaged Marcus Trescothik (12) to take the second place on the list.
