Kashmir: The Indian army have installed a windmill at the LoC in north Kashmir’s Gurez, popular for its landscape, to give a boost to greener energy and help overcome the electricity deficit.
The move is aimed at creating greener energy by producing electricity using this windmill at the forward post which will reduce the carbon footprint in the lush area.
Gurez, which has slowly become popular among tourists, has no captive electricity source and its complete power requirement is dependent on Diesel generators. It gets even worst during the winter when the area remains cut off for months from the rest of Kashmir due to heavy snow accumulations, which makes electricity even rarer.
The project has been done in collaboration with Suresh Kapadia, a philanthropist. On average 6000 liters of diesel are consumed by the forces in a year at each post with a total annual cost of Rs 5,25,600 and a Carbon footprint of 16 tonnes.
The total electricity produced by this windmill is around 3000W. The annual cost of a 5 KVA diesel generator is around rupees 5,45,000 and a windmill only 11,000.
The move is seen as a small step in not only creating a cleaner environment but also creating cost-efficient electricity.
