Ahead of the one-off rescheduled Test against England, which starts on July 1 at Edgbaston, India is up against English county side Leicestershire in a four-day warm-up match to step up their preparations for the all-important match. All the available 15 members of the Indian team are plying their trade in the ongoing game in Leicester. And out of the 15, four Indian players – Rishabh Pant, Jasprit Bumrah, Cheteshwar Pujara and Prasidh Krishna – are playing for the hosts.
On the second day of the game, India asked Leicestershire to come and bat after they declared their first innings for 246 runs for the loss of eight wickets. And for the hosts, star Indian batter Rishabh Pant top-scored by scoring 76 runs from 87 balls. Rishabh, who did not score a fifty-plus score in the IPL 2022 or the five-match T20I series against South Africa, looked in his element and scored 14 fours and one six during his stay at the crease.
He started off conservatively and got stuck at 44 for a very long time before he started to open his shoulders. He was particularly harsh against Indian teammate Umesh Yadav, whom he slammed for a huge six. He then went after another pacer, Mohammed Siraj, as well, before charging Ravindra Jadeja, who later sent him back to the dugout. Pant smashed Jadeja for a four and was looking to go for a maximum against the world’s number one Test all-rounder when he mistimed a ball, which was safely taken by Shreyas Iyer.
After he was dismissed in the 46th over, he got hugs from Indian team members, including Jadeja, who got him out.
Earlier, Indian pacer Mohammed Shami, who got the prized wicket for Cheteshwar Pujara in the same game, also celebrated the dismissal by hugging his Indian teammate. Pujara, who earned his place back in the team after scoring 720 runs for Sussex in County Championship Division Two matches, failed to open his account.
