Sharath Kamal added the cherry on the cake by clinching the gold in the men's table tennis singles event. This win also was his fourth medal in the ongoing edition and 12th overall in the history of the games which made him the second most decorated Indian athlete.
With a total tally of 61 medals, India finished 4th on the table. While on face value, India slipped one place and had five fewer medals than their 2018 tally but a deeper look at the numbers shows, India performed better. In the Gold Coast Games, India won 66 medals - 26 gold medals and 20 silver and bronze each.
The reality is that India's most successful sport CWG in history - shooting was absent from the 2022 edition. In 2018, India won a total of 16 medals in the sport that included a massive seven gold medals. One can only imagine how high India could have been on the medals tally, if shooting was part of the roaster in Birmingham
Here is a sport by sport comparison of India's performance in 2022 compared to 2018 -
Wrestling
India matched their 2018 tally in Wrestling by getting 12 medals home from the sport. However, this time they had an extra gold medal. Six Indian wrestlers won gold in CWG 2022 while five had done that in 2018.
Weightlifting
After Wrestling, it was Weightlifting that brought India's biggest medal haul in 2020. India did one better in 2022 than they did in 2018 after securing a total of 10 medals with three golds. While India won 9 weightlifting medals in 2018, there were five gold medals in them.
Table Tennis
India had a memorable run in Table Tennis in 2022 with seven medals coming from the sport. However, this was one short of the 2018 tally where India won eight medals. The notable disappointment came in the women's team event where India did not want any medal having won the gold in 2018.
Boxing
Like Table Tennis, Boxing was another sport where India fell off of their 2018 tally. Though India had a successful run in 2022 with seven medals that had three golds, they had won nine medals in 2018. On both occasions, India won a total of three medals.
Badminton
India managed to match their 2018 tally in 2022 with six medals from the sport. However, there were more gold medals as the country got three top podium finishes despite losing the mixed team final. In 2018, there were two golds for India in badminton.
Athletics
Despite the big Neeraj Chopra shaped hole, India comfortably bettered their 2018 tally in 2022. India got a total of 8 medals from athletics in Birmingham which is significantly more than the three they had won in 2018.
Lawn Bowls
Before 2022, India had never won a medal in Lawn Bowls despite it being part of the games since its inception. However, the country's destiny with the sport changed in 2022 after the country got two medals including a historic gold in women's fours.
Squash
India had won two medals in squash in 2018 and they matched the feat in 2022. However, there were two silvers in Gold Coast while both Indian medals in Birmingham were bronze.
Judo
While Judo was not part of the CWG in 2018, India won three medals in Birmingham in the sport. This included two silvers and bronze.
Cricket
2022 was the first time in 24 years that cricket was part of the event and also the debut of women's cricket and the Harmanpreet Kaur-led side managed to win a historic silver medal.
Hockey
To the shock of many, both the Indian men's and women's teams missed out on a medal in 2018 however they made amends in 2022 as both won medals. While the women won a bronze, the men secured a silver.
Para Powerlifting
India won one medal each in 2018 and 2020 in powerlifting. However, this time around there was a gold for the nation to celebrate. In Gold Coast, there was one bronze for the country.
