Seeking redemption at the 2022 edition of the Commonwealth Games (CWG) in Birmingham on Thursday, boxing superstar Amit Panghal has entered the semi-finals of the showpiece event with an impressive win over his Scottish opponent. The Indian boxer outclassed Scottish boxer Lennon Mulligan in the quarter-finals of the men's flyweight category on Day 7 of the CWG 2022. Panghal defeated his Scottish counterpart 5-0 to secure his berth in the last four in the flyweight category at the Commonwealth Games.
Panghal secured the win for India with a unanimous verdict. Tiring his opponent with his defensive work, Panghal landed a few clean hits in the opening round of the contest. In the second round, the Indian boxer received a 4:1 split decision in his favour. Showcasing his impressive footwork, Panghal thwarted Mulligan's bid of staging a late comeback as the star boxer won the match by unanimous verdict.
The Indian boxer won a silver medal in the 2018 edition of the Commonwealth Games hosted by Gold Coast in Australia. Panghal, who entered the Tokyo Games 2020 as the top seed, had suffered a premature exit in the Summer Games last year. The Indian boxer was knocked out of the Tokyo Olympics with a 1-4 defeat at the hands of Yuberjen Martinez in the pre-quarterfinals. Rio Games silver medallist Martinez had defeated the Indian boxer in the men's flyweight (52kg) category.
Panghal’s win over the Scottish youngster has assured India of another medal in boxing. Earlier, star boxers Nikhat Zareen (50kg), Nitu Ganghas (48kg) and Mohd Hussamudin (57kg) secured their respective spots for the semifinal stage. Thus, all three Indian boxers are assured of medals in their respective categories. On Wednesday, Tokyo Olympic bronze medallist Lovlina Borgohain crashed out in the quarterfinals stage of the CWG 2022. India's Ashish Kumar also lost his bout on Day 6 of the Games.
