US, South Korea fire four missiles into East Sea after North Korea conducts ballistic missile test over Japan

The United States and South Korea on Tuesday fired four ground-to-ground missiles into the East Sea. These misssiles were launched in response to North Korea firing a ballistic missile over Japan earlier in the day.

Seoul: The United States and South Korea on Tuesday fired four ground-to-ground missiles into the East Sea. The development was confirmed by the Yonhap news agency citing South Korea's military. The sea is also known as the Sea of Japan.
The missiles were launched in response to North Korea firing of a ballistic missile over Japan. The US and South Korea fired two Army Tactical Missile System (ATACMS) missiles each, the South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff said as reported by AFP. These missiles hit mock targets.
Earlier in the day, Pyongyang test-fired the nuclear-capable ballistic missile over Japan for the first time in five years. After the launch the Japanese government issued evacuation alerts. Trains were also halted. The missile landed in the Pacific Ocean. It reportedly flew a distance of about 4,600 kilometres at an altitude of almost 1,000 kilometres. It reached a top speed of Mach 17, reported CNN.
US President Joe Biden, South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida condemned the missile test conducted by North Korea. Meanwhile, United Nations chief Antonio Guterres called it "clearly an escalation".
After Pyongyang test-fired the ballistic missile, South Korean and US fighter jets had reportedly carried out a bombing drill in the Yellow Sea. Notably, it was the 23rd missile test conducted by Pyongyang this year. The last time when North Korea fired a such type of missile over Japan was in the year 2017. Since May, the US has also been warning that North Korea preparing for a nuclear test.
