Jammu: In a shocking incident, Jammu and Kashmir's Director General (Prisons) Hemant Kumar Lohia was found dead on Monday night. A senior police officer said the Jammu and Kashmir Police suspect that his domestic help was responsible for the crime.
Director General of Police Dilbag Singh described it as an "extremely unfortunate" incident and said a manhunt has been launched to nab Lohia's domestic help, identified as Jasir. It was revealed by Singh that the suspect had even attempted to burn Lohia's body.
Meanwhile, Mukesh Singh, the Additional Director General of Police, Jammu zone, also said that Lohia's domestic help is absconding and the search for him has begun.
A 1992 batch IPS officer, Lohia (57) was found dead with his throat slit at his residence in Udaiwala, on the outskirts of Jammu.
A preliminary examination of the crime scene indicated that Lohia must have been applying some oil on his foot that showed swelling, said the ADGP.
The killer first suffocated Lohia to death, then slit his throat with a broken ketchup bottle, and later attempted to set the body ablaze, said Singh.
Guards present at the officer's residence witnessed the fire in Lohia's room. The door was locked from the inside, so they had to break it open.
"The domestic help with the officer is absconding. A search for him has started," he said, noting that forensic and crime teams are on the spot.
"The investigation process has begun. Senior officers are on spot," the officer said, adding that the Jammu and Kashmir Police are deeply saddened by the death of their senior officer.
Meanwhile, news agency ANI cited sources as saying: "The servant of the top officer is absconding. The body has been sent for medico-legal formalities. It apparently looks like a murder. It is not a terror-related incident."
HK Lohia was promoted and appointed as Director General of Prisons in the Union Territory in August.
