Ayan Mukerji is bringing a never-seen-before spectacle to the Indian audience in the form of Brahmastra Part One: Shiva, starring Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt in lead. Bankrolled by Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions, the fantasy adventure film marks the beginning of India’s first original universe - The Astraverse.
In a newly released video about the making of the highly ambitious project, Ayan talked about the decade-long journey that he undertook to turn his vision into reality. He revealed that the idea for Brahmastra first came to him in 2011 and how he overcame innumerable challenges to create the first instalment of the trilogy he has envisioned.
“The journey of Brahmastra started in 2011 when I was in Shimla surrounded by the Himalayas. My first film (Wake Up Sid) had released and I was working on the script of my next film (Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani),” narrates Ayan.
He continues, “From the beginning, the vision of Brahmastra was to showcase such a cinematic spectacle which has never been seen in our country. But the base of the film should be inspired by our culture, India’s mythical stories and our spirituality. The story of Brahmastra is so massive that it couldn’t be told in one film. So I decided that this film would be made in three parts, a trilogy.”
Ayan further reveals that he had to learn a new kind of filmmaking and do a lot of research in order to make the film that he wanted to. He also mentions that the kind of budget it required had never seen allotted to any Indian film before.
“I always believed that if we could overcome all these challenges and make Brahmastra in the right way, then this film will be a new, ambitious achievement for Indian cinema,” he adds.
“When Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani was released I was 29 years old and when Brahmastra will release I will be 39. I didn’t even imagine that so much time would go by. 10 years to turn the dream of Brahmastra into a reality. I genuinely believe that it required so much time and effort so that for our audience, we could bring a truly high-quality, once-in-a-lifetime movie experience,” concludes Ayan.
Also starring Amitabh Bachchan, Mouni Roy, and Nagarjuna in pivotal roles, Brahmastra Part One: Shiva will be out for the world to see on September 9.
