Noticing changes in your speech and voice? Something could be wrong with thyroid levels

Thyroid problems are known to affect metabolic function as the butterfly-shaped gland in the throat secretes hormones that influence body weight and physical and neurological function. But did you know that thyroid disorders could manifest in voice and speech changes as well? Strange as it may sound, hypothyroidism symptoms could appear on the face, in the voice, and in speech.
In the early stages, voice changes could occur due to a sore throat – only when the condition prevails over a period of time does it require medical attention.

New Delhi: Thyroid problems are known to affect metabolic function as the butterfly-shaped gland in the throat secretes hormones that influence body weight and physical and neurological function. But did you know that thyroid disorders could manifest in voice and speech changes as well? Strange as it may sound, hypothyroidism symptoms could appear on the face, in the voice, and in speech.
Hypothyroidism is when the thyroid gland does not produce sufficient levels of thyroid hormone. Its deficiency, which is most commonly seen in older women, can have the following effects on health:
  1. Weight gain
  2. Sensitivity towards cold weather
  3. Dry skin
  4. Constipation
  5. Heart rate fluctuations
  6. Facial swelling
But apart from changes in the physical attributes, hypothyroidism can reflect in voice changes as well as per a report in the Eurasian Journal of Medicine.
How does hypothyroidism manifest in the voice and speech?
Researchers say that hypothyroidism reflects in the voice in the following ways:
  1. Vocal fatigue
  2. Roughness
  3. Low voice
  4. Slow speech
  5. Reduced range
It indicates impairment in nerve function as an underactive thyroid gland can slow down bodily functions and lead to decreased stimulation of the nerves and muscles in the face. Dull facial expressions and droopy eyelids could also hint at the condition.
In the early stages, this could occur due to a sore throat – only when the condition prevails over a period of time does it require medical attention.
Why is it necessary to address hypothyroidism at an early stage?
Failure to address and manage hypothyroidism in time can trigger a number of health complications ranging from uncontrolled weight gain to coma to even death in extreme cases. This happens when thyroid levels are dangerously low.
