Star Pakistan fast-bowler Shaheen Shah Afridi, who has been out of action for more than two months now, has started bowling practice in order to get fit in time and ready to play for Pakistan again ahead of the upcoming edition of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. The 22-year-old, who won the ICC cricketer of the year award in 2021, last played for the Men in Green against Sri Lanka in the first Test of a two-match series in the island nation in July. He got injured in that match while fielding and since then he has been out. He missed the Asia Cup T20 tournament, in which Pakistan finished as runners-up, and is also not part of the Babar Azam-led side for the home series against England.
Instead, he is completing his rehabilitation in London. The left-arm pacer took to Twitter to share a video of himself bowling in the football field with a short run-up and captioned it, "Your success belongs to Allah, not your mindset," providing an update on his recovery.
Afridi, who has been included in the 15-member squad announced for the mega event, is expected to miss the upcoming triangular series in New Zealand also, and will only make his return during the pre-tournament warm-up matches.
In the T20 World Cup, Pakistan is clubbed with India, Bangladesh, and South Africa as of now, and two more teams will join them via qualifiers. The Babar Azam-led side will begin their campaign in this year’s tournament against India on October 23 at Melbourne Cricket Ground. This will be the second consecutive time the two sides will play their T20 World Cup opener against each other.
In the 2021 edition of the tournament as well, Pakistan faced India in the first match and, for the first time in the history of World Cup matches, managed to get the better of the Men in Blue even. In that game, Shaheen Shah Afridi was the chief destroyer for Pakistan as he accounted for the dismissals of Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul, and Virat Kohli.
