India have confirmed their second medal in boxing at the 2022 Commonwealth Games (CWG) with Amit Panghal defeating English boxer Kiaran Macdonald in the final of Men's 51 KG category. Panghal cruised to victory as the officials awarded him an unanimous victory on Sunday (August 7) at Birmingham.
Panghal beat Zambia’s Patrick Chinyemba in the semi-final. He had won the tie with relative ease as the judges gave an unanimous decision in his favour to seal his place in the gold medal bout and seal a medal for him.
On a glorious morning for the nation, this is India's second medal of the day in boxing. Just minutes before Amit's victory, women boxer Nitu Ghanghas sealed a gold medal after defeating England’s Demie-Jade Resztan 5-0 in the gold medal bout.
This is Amit's second successive medal in the commonwealth games. He had won the silver medal in the 2018 edition at Gold Coast. Amit made up for his loss in the gold medal in 2018 where he was beaten by Galal Yafai from England.
Apart from his heroics in the CWG, Amit had also won the gold medal at the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta. Apart from that, he secured the silver at the 2019 World Championships in Yekaterinburg. He also has three medals to his name in the Asian Champions with one gold, silver, and bronze each.
India could add two more gold medals to their tally from boxing later in the day. Nikhat Zareen and Sagar Ahlawat will both be in action in the final of the women's 50KG and men's 92 KG respectively. Apart from these four, the likes of Rohit Tokas, Mohammad Hussamuddin, and Jaismine Lamboria have won the bronze medal for the country in boxing.
Overall, India have a total of 43 medals with 15 golds, 11 silver, and 17 bronze medals to their name.
