On Sunday, Threat actors infiltrated the popular NFT registration platform - Premint and got away with 320 NFTs and more than $400,000 in Ethereum in one of the biggest digital heists this year.
CertiK, a blockchain security firm analysed the hack and according to them, the threat actors used malicious javascript codes to compromise the website, and then impersonated the Premint popups, luring the users to give up their wallet details. However, many users noticed the unsual popup and took to twitter to wrn other users. But by then the threat actors had tricked multiple users.
The stolen NFTs included those from popular collections Goblintown, Otherside, Bored Ape Yacht Club, Moonbirds, and Oddities. The threat actors immediately took to marketplaces like OpenSea; one stolen Bored Ape to flip these NFTs and few sold for a price of 89 ETH, or around $132,000.
Over the period of the whole day, the threat actors secured 275 ETH, or just over $400,000, in sales of all 320 stolen NFTs. But thats not all, to erase the digital footprint of the money transactions, the hackers then a service called 'Tornado Cash', This service pools cryptocurrency deposits of users and mixes them up, effectively erasing the digital trail left by blockchain.
