Ludhiana: A video purportedly showing the Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) of Ludhiana city brutally thrashing a man with a stick surfaced on the internet on Saturday and has gone viral on social media.
The incident took place in the Peeru Banda area of Salem Tabri in Ludhiana on Thursday late night.
In the now-viral video, the ACP seen can be initially seen talking to two persons. He then starts thrashing one of the two men incessantly with a stick. Though two other cops present at the spot tried to intervene, they could not stop the ACP from hitting the man. He hits the man so hard that the stick breaks into two pieces, reported The Indian Express.
In the meantime, the victim can be seen asking the top cop the reason behind the attack to avail no response from anyone.
On being asked, Ludhiana police commissioner Kaustubh Sharma said that though they have not received any complaint yet, he has directed a JCP-rank officer to find out the details of the incident, reported The Indian Express.
Reportedly, ACP (north) Maninder Bedi had reached the spot for a drug search operation. In the meantime, a sweet shop owner, the man who was allegedly being thrashed in the video, opposed the police action and questioned the checking of the vehicles parked outside his shop. Following this, the ACP thrashed him with a stick.
Meanwhile, ACP Bedi admitted that his behaviour in the video was a “bit harsh” adding that he resorted to hitting the man after “he (the man being thrashed in the video) used derogatory and offensive language against his dignity and that of the police force.”
“I am a gazetted officer and I know that hitting someone is not right but then I cannot tolerate offensive language against my dignity,” said ACP as quoted by The Indian Express.
