Monsoons in India are urban death traps

Every year, during the rainy season hundreds die due to flooding, diseases, accidents, electric shocks, and wall and building collapse.
Recently, two people lost their lives in Bangalore after being electrocuted while wading through flooded streets. Killer potholes are another
A report by the Maharashtra State Highway Police revealed that potholes led to 522 road accidents in the state, claiming 166 lives and leaving 343 people seriously injured in 2018. Minister of Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari informed the Parliament in 2020 that around 3,564 road accidents took place in the country because of potholes.

Tips to stay safe

Monsoons can cause a lot of trouble; hence here are a few tips you can follow to stay safe
  • Never touch electric wires: In the rainy season, always stay away from electric wires, especially the ones that have fallen from heavy rain and are dangling from the pole.
  • Avoid walking in water-filled streets: One of the top precautions to be taken during the rainy season includes staying away from the water that’s standing on the road. These pools of water may contain a host of bacteria, which can lead to several viral diseases and fungal infections.
  • Drive carefully: Road accidents are quite common during the monsoon season, which is why drivers need to practice extreme caution in this weather. Since the roads can become slippery, it is advisable to avoid speeding.
  • Stay away from old buildings: There are many cases of old buildings that collapse during heavy rains. Make sure to contact the city’s civic authorities to know about the safety procedures and measures to be taken accordingly.
