Kyiv: Ukraine on Thursday claimed to have recaptured more territories from Russian troops in the Kherson region. Ukraine's Southern army command spokeswoman Natalia Gumeniuk said that Ukrainian troops regained control of more than 400 square kilometres of the Kherson region since the beginning of October.
As per Gumeniuk, the recaptured region was home to nearly 30 towns and villages. These territories were occupied by Russian troops for months. The announcement came after Russia bombarded the city of Zaporizhzhia. Seven Russian missiles reportedly struck the city. In the Russian strikes, several civilians lost their lives.
The Ukrainian military also claimed to have recaptured some territories in the two separatist republics of Lugansk and Donetsk in the Donbas region. Notably, These areas have been partially under Russian control since 2014. Earlier in the day, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky addressed a meeting in Prague of European heads of state. He called on the European countries to supply more weapons to Ukraine's army in fight against Russian troops.
On Wednesday, Zelensky also said that the forces of his country regained control over three more villages -- Novovoskresenske, Novogrygorivka and Petropavlivka --in the southern Kherson region.
Earlier this month, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced the annexation of four Ukrainian regions - Kherson, Zaporizhzhia, Lugansk and Donetsk. Referendums were held in these regions in September this year by pro-Russian separatists. The move was condemned by the United States and other western countries.
Ukrainian troops launched a counter-offensive in the southern and eastern parts of the country against Russian soldiers in September. Russia started its military operation in Ukraine on February 24.
