  • Chopra had a bad fall during his third attempt at Kuortane
  • Chopra won a gold medal with a throw of 86.69 meters in his very first attempt
India's golden boy Neeraj Chopra continued his formidable run in Finland as following the national record-breaking throw at Paavo Nurmi Games, he won a gold medal at the Kuortane Games on Saturday in his very first attempt. Chopra in his first attempt threw the javelin at 86.69 meters, which was enough for him to secure a gold medal at Kuotane leaving behind the Trinidadian 2012 Olympic champion Keshorn Walcott (86.64) and 2019 world champion, Grenada's Anderson Peters (84.75).
The weather conditions at Kuortane weren't ideal for javelin throw as with incessant rains, the running area had become very wet and slippery and it was hard for the athletes to find their footing literally and Chopra too escaped an injury scare after a bad fall.
Chopra during his third attempt, slipped and fell on his left with the impact on the shoulder just after he had thrown the javelin. It seemed a hard impact, however, Chopra cleared the air over the same as he gears up for the Diamond League.
Taking to Twitter, Chopra wrote, "Tough conditions with the weather, but happy to get my first win of the season here at Kuortane. I'm feeling good and looking forward to kicking off my Diamond League season at @BAUHAUSGALAN on the 30th. Thank you for all the messages and support."
Chopra may have fallen short of his 89.30-meter mark at Paavo, however, a gold medal will keep him in good stead ahead of the Diamond League.
Informing about Chopra's health, the Athletics Federation of India took to Twitter to say that everything was alright with the Haryana-born lad. "News from Kuortane: All well with @Neeraj_chopra1 after that bad slip on his third attempt. Nothing to worry. Well done #NeerajChopra, congrats for one more top class performance."
Chopra may have beaten Peters twice in a span of four days, however, he is still leading the charts this year with the gigantic throw of 93.07 meters at Doha last month.
