Salt is one of the oldest commodities and occupies a valuable position in India's freedom struggle. Salt or namak was regarded as “God’s gift” in ancient times. Salt was used as a weapon to conquer enemies by cutting its supply in the ancient times. We all know about two terms “Namak haram” meaning traitor and “Namak halal” meaning loyal. Infact the native soldiers of British regime used to swear loyalty to the company by taking a handful of salt during their recruitment. When India attained Independence in 1947, salt was being imported from the United Kingdom & Adens to meet its domestic requirement. In India, nearly 30 million tonne of salt is produced every year and exports nearly 10 million tonne exported to over 55 countries.Vinnii Motiwala is here with more details.
