New Delhi: Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Monday hit back at Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena for questioning Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and his ministers' absence at birth anniversary events of Mahatma Gandhi and Lal Bahadur Shastri.
The Kejriwal-led party alleged that the Delhi LG is writing letters to the state government on the instructions of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Issuing a scathing response to LG's letter, AAP said, "The CM has always attended Gandhi Jayanti and Lal Bahadur Shastri Jayanti programs in last several years. CM was in Gujarat on that day and that's why he could not attend the program."
"It is important to understand the reason for LG's letter. CM addressed a very massive rally in tribal area of Gujarat against empty chairs in PM's program in Ahmedabad just two days back. PM is livid. This letter has been written by LG on PM's instructions," it said.
The rebuttal came hours after Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena accused CM Arvind Kejriwal and his ministers of showing "utter disregard" towards the commemoration of Mahatma Gandhi and former prime minister Lal Bahadur Shastri on their birth anniversaries on October 2.
In a letter, the LG said neither Kejriwal nor his ministers were present at Raj Ghat and Vijay Ghat, memorials to Gandhi and Shastri, even as President Droupadi Murmu, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and representatives of foreign missions in India among others were there to pay homage.
The LG noted that Kejriwal's deputy Manish Sisodia was "perfunctorily present" there for a few minutes, but "did not deem the occasion fit enough to stay the course".
He also said that such derelictions should be avoided in future.
