Pune: Following water discharge from the Khadakwasla dam, which reached its maximum capacity of 1.97 million cubic feet (TMC) amid heavy downpour in the catchment areas, the Mutha river, which flows through the city up to the confluence point at Sangam bridge, swelled on Tuesday.
The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) warned the low-lying areas along the riverbank about temporary displacement as the water level in Mutha rose. The PMC also sent out teams to check and evacuate areas vulnerable to flooding.
The water discharge began late on Monday night and rose progressively on Tuesday night, peaking at 13,142 cubic feet per second (cusecs).
After the river's water level was raised, the Deccan Gymkhana area's riverfront roadways were restricted to vehicular traffic. As a precaution, the Baba Bhide bridge was also shut down. Traffic jams on major routes including JM Road, Karve Road, Kelkar Road, and other narrower lanes in the Peth regions resulted from the closure of riverbank roadways.
With the arrival of more than 2 TMC of water in only a single day, the total storage in the four dams that make up the Khadakwasla circle increased to 11.57 TMC (39.69 percent) on Tuesday evening. While Temghar's livestock increased to 24 percent, stocks in Panshet and Varasgaon each went beyond 35 percent.
The Metro construction was halted, according to MahaMetro officials, after water was dumped into the Mutha river. A safer location was chosen for the apparatus. According to them, the authorities operating along the river were informed about the water release.
