Amid uptick in COVID cases, Centre asks Delhi, 6 states to ensure adequate testing, increase vaccination pace

New Delhi: Amid the rising Covid cases, Union Health Secretary wrote to Principal Health Secretaries of Delhi, Kerala, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Odisha, Tamil Nadu and Telangana on the issue, prompting them to 'aim to increase the pace of vaccination for eligible population, follow the five-fold strategy and adherence to Covid Appropriate Behaviour.'

Notably, Karnataka CM Basavaraj Bommai tested positive for Covid and had to cancel his Delhi trip. "I have tested positive for Covid-19 with mild symptoms and have isolated myself at home. Those who came in contact with me over the last few days, kindly isolate yourself and get yourself tested. My trip to Delhi stands cancelled," the CM informed in a statement today.

Meanwhile, Dr Suresh Kumar, MD of LNJP hospital in Delhi noted today that the infection cases were rising in the national capital and the positivity rate has gone up along with hospitalisation. He also noted that the recovery was still quite good among patients. "Though patients are getting admitted, complications are less. 4-4.5% beds occupied. The third dose of Covid vaccine is a must for all," he said.

Senior Pulmonologist at Apollo Hospital in Delhi, Dr Nikhil Modi on August 4 noted the COVID cases are definitely rising but symptoms are mild.

"The COVID cases are definitely on the rise, Delhi also reported more than 2000 cases yesterday. But most of the patients are having very mild symptoms," Dr Modi said. Taking about the risk to people who have comorbidities, he said, "Patients with 80 to 90 years of age with diabetes and other issues have been reporting to us but all of them have mild symptoms."
