Guwahati: Congress MP Abdul Khaliq on Tuesday claimed that it was Mughals who united India, which was then divided into small princely states, and gave it its modern form of 'Hindustan'. He, however, clarified that he is not a Mughal or heir descendant in any way.
While speaking to media, he said, "India, which was divided into small (princely) states, was given the form of Hindustan. So I am proud of the Mughals, but I'm not a Mughal, not their descendant. They gave a shape, the name Hindustan so I'm proud of them."
The Lok Sabha MP from Assam's Barpeta constituency further said the country's Independence struggle would have been incomplete without the Mughals.
Yesterday, Abdul Khaliq attacked Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma saying, "Our chief minister has an allergy to the Mughals. However, he too claimed that Delhi was the capital of India since the Mughal era. Though he feels awkward expressing it openly, that's the reality."
The Congress MP said that the Mughals had built the monuments like Red Fort, and the Taj Mahal in India and hence their contribution to the country cannot be ignored.
He said that every Prime Minister of the country has been hoisting the National Flag at Red Fort on the occasion of Independence Day.
"If we hate Mughals that much, then hoisting the Tricolour at Red Fort should not be the right thing to do," he added.
Khaliq's remarks came after Himanta Sarma targeted his Delhi counterpart Arvind Kejriwal, saying that Delhi has been the capital of India since the Mughal times.
