Your kidneys are in need of protection - Study names the best drink for them

Water, as per experts, should be a go-to solution for kidney woes. According to the Institute of Medicine of The National Academies, men need 13 cups of fluids in a day while women need 9 cups for optimal function. Apart from water, food can also support the wellness goal but water is preference. The National Kidney Foundation states that 60 to 70 per cent of the body weight is due to water.
Kidneys work by filtering and removing waste and extra water from the blood at about half a cup per minute and then sending the surplus, toxic water to the bladder to pass it as urine.

New Delhi: Think of the kidneys and one can only picture two bean-shaped organs on either side of the body. The hydration engineers filter fluids and excrete the toxins and waste through urine. The kidneys are responsible for keeping the body hydrated and regulating its fluid levels. But is there an ideal drink for healthy kidneys? Expert say there is a drink and what’s more, the human body is already 70 per cent of that fluid – it is water.
How does water play a role in kidney health?
Water, as per experts, should be a go-to solution for kidney woes. Kidneys work by filtering and removing waste and extra water from the blood at about half a cup per minute and then sending the surplus, toxic water to the bladder to pass it as urine. While filtering the blood, kidneys regulate calcium, phosphors, sodium, and potassium levels in the blood which is crucial for muscle, nerves and organ function.
Is water the only choice for healthy kidneys?
While water is key to healthy kidneys, there are other ways to rehydrating that can add to the benefits. A kidney-friendly fluid must contain electrolytes like sodium and potassium. While water hydrates and removes toxins, potassium and salt are regulators that add glucose to the drink for better hydration.
Combining potassium and sodium and the right amount of glucose in the drink can help it get absorbed through the intestinal wall to speed up hydration. This is why oral hydration fluids are made from molasses, water, potassium and sodium. Coconut water, cranberry juice, lemon water and coffee are also kidney-friendly drinks.
