Ahmedabad: AMC to inspect, fumigate breeding spots on terraces of buildings using drones

The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation will tackle the problem of mosquito breeding grounds in the city using drones. The civic body plans to use two drones to identify breeding spots on rooftops and spray larvicides on the same. The unchecked accumulation of water on terraces seems to be coming up as one of the key reasons for mosquito breeding.

Ahmedabad: The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation is planning to inspect mosquito breeding grounds on the rooftops of buildings in the city using drones. On a general basis, the municipal health inspectors collectively can check 1,000 properties a day but terraces are mostly excluded from these inspections.
The unchecked accumulation of stagnant water on terraces of commercial shops, residential buildings, and even institutions like schools is turning out to be a major reason for mosquito breeding in several areas of the city.
To curb this problem, the AMC will procure two drones from private agencies. The first drone will locate breeding spots on roofs using its high-resolution camera supported by artificial intelligence, while the second drone fitted with a fumigating agent will be deployed to the identified spots to spray larvicides onto the sitting water.
Two major cities, Mumbai and Hyderabad, and Mehsana in Gujarat have already used this tactic of deploying such drones as part of the Mosquito Breeding Detector (MBD) projects.
If the drones turn out to be effective, The AMC in the future will use the data collected from the drones to send notices of warning and even for issuing fines to owners of the buildings/ shops/ houses for mosquito breeding.
These drones will also be deployed in areas where vector-borne diseases like Dengue and Malaria are being reported.
