The most successful team in FIFA World Cup history, Brazil, opened its campaign in the 2022 FIFA World Cup on Thursday (November 24) against Serbia in a Group G match that was played at the Lusail Iconic Stadium. The five-time winners, who are the top contenders to win the title this year in Qatar, secured a routine 2-0 win over Serbia.
Thursday’s win in Lusail was the second straight time Brazil beat Serbia 2-0 in a FIFA World Cup group stage match. In the 2018 edition as well, Brazil defeated the European side by the same margin.
For Brazil, both goals came in the second half, and both of them were scored by Richarlison, who was playing at the number nine position. In his maiden World Cup appearance for the Selecao, the 25-year-old Spurs forward stole the limelight from Neymar and grabbed the headlines with his stunning second-half brace.
Serbia somehow managed to keep the scoreline 0-0 in the first 45 minutes, but after the change of ends, Brazil showed its class, and the star-studded attack, which comprised of Vinicius Jr., Neymar Jr., and Raphinha along with Richarlison upfront, went all out against the Serbian team, which failed to keep the scoreline 0-0 for long and conceded the first goal in the 62nd minute of the game.
The first goal of the night ignited Brazil, and they upped the tempo, and soon they earned the reward for it as well, when in the 73rd minute of the game, Richarlison scored the second goal of the night. His second was set up by Real Madrid attacker Vinicius Jr. Vinicius' cross with the outside of his right boot was controlled by the Spurs’ forward, who then spun around and leapt to score with an outrageous acrobatic effort.
His stunning acrobatic effort is surely the goal of the World Cup so far. With the win over Serbia, Brazil reached the number one position in Group G with three points and a goal difference of +2. In their second match on Monday (November 28), Brazil will now face Switzerland, who also have three points. If Brazil manages to beat Switzerland, then it will confirm its place in the Round of 16.
