Ludhiana: Punjab Vigilance Bureau on Monday arrested former minister Congress Bharat Bhushan Ashu over 'scam' in awarding contracts for transporting foodgrain. Ashu was arrested in the case of allotting transportation tenders on the fake registration numbers of vehicles. He was arrested from Congress MP Ravneet Singh Bittu's house in Ludhiana, Ravinder Pal Singh Sandhu, SSP Vigilance Ludhiana noted.
"Vigilance Bureau arrested former minister Bharat Bhushan Ashu in food grains transportation tenders scam and further investigation, in this case, is under progress and involvement of others would also be probed in this scam," an official statement by the Punjab government said.
Congress workers started a protest outside the Vigilance Bureau office in Ludhiana over the arrest of party leader and former minister Bharat Bhushan Ashu.
Earlier, an official statement noted that 'a case was registered against former minister of food, civil supplies and consumer affairs Bharat Bhushan Ashu on Friday in the scam of allotting transportation tenders on fake registration numbers of vehicles.' Notably, the minister was arrested hours after protesting outside the vigilance bureau's office in Mohali.
Earlier today, Punjab Congress leaders staged a protest against the probe in the matter by the Vigilance Bureau claiming that the 'government is using the bureau for political vendetta.' Punjab Congress chief Amrinder Singh Raja Warring said that the 'AAP government has indulged in vendetta and witch-hunt in Punjab.'
"While in Delhi they were crying persecution and victimhood, in Punjab they are resorting to a worse type of vendetta against their political opponents," Warring said.
