  • Sruyakumar Yadav flopped as an opener for the second consecutive game against India in T20Is.
  • Kris Srikanth has blasted India captain Rohit Sharma for such experiments.
  • Srikanth feels SKY could lose his confidence with such experiments ahead of the T20 World Cup 2022.
In the absence of KL Rahul, the Indian cricket team has surprisingly gone ahead with Suryakumar Yadav as an opener alongside Rohit Sharma. While it was Rishabh Pant who was tried at the top in a few matches against England, Suryakumar has been the man to be experimented with against the Windies.
In the first two T20Is, the gamble hasn't paid off and there are many who are struggling to get their head around the experiment, especially considering Ishan Kishan is warming the bench.
Former India cricketer Kris Srikanth, hit out at Rohit Sharma for such experiments, suggesting Surya should be played at the No. 4 position in T20Is.
“Suryakumar Yadav is a brilliant player at No.4. He should be batting at No.4 in the T20 World Cup. So why do you want to make him open. If you want someone to open, drop Shreyas Iyer and pick Ishan Kishan instead. What I am trying to say is simple...don't spoil the cricketer like Suryakumar Yadav. Please don't do that. I will tell you what will, after a couple of failures he will lose his confidence. Cricket is a confidence game,” Srikanth said in a chat on Fancode.
Srikanth sees Suryakumar as a certain pick in India's team for T20 World Cup 2022. Hence, he feels such experiments with Surya could see the batter lose confidence in himself going into the showpiece event in Australia.
“Whatever it was, I completely failed to understand it. You ought to have used Rishabh Pant today if you were planning to use him as the opener for a couple of games. Give him five chances at least. In addition, Rohit Sharma, the captain, and Rahul Dravid, the coach, support the players for at least 5–6 games,” he had said on Fan Code ahead of the start of the 2nd T20I.
In the second T20I, Surya only scored 11 runs off 6 balls before being dismissed by Obed McCoy who bagged as many as 6 wickets in the match. India were bundled out for just 138 as Windies secured a 5-wicket win to go 1-1 in the series.
