10 per cent water cut in Mumbai and neighboring areas; heavy rain not likely in coming days

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has announced a 10 per cent water cut across Mumbai starting Monday due to low water stocks in seven lakes that supply water to the city. So far, the city has received 230.4 mm of rainfall which is less than 50 per cent of the average 493.1 mm for June.

Mumbai: With the city witnessing rainfall amounts almost half the season’s average, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has announced a 10 per cent water cut across Mumbai starting Monday. The insufficient rainfall in the catchment areas of seven lakes that supply potable water to the city has caused the existing water stocks in them to dip below 10 per cent.
So far, Mumbai has received 230.4 mm of rainfall which is less than 50 per cent of the average 493.1 mm for June. With no heavy rain forecast by the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) in the coming days, a further water cut is likely.
“Due to insufficient rainfall & insufficient water stock in the 7 dams & lakes that supply water to Mumbai Metropolitan Area, 10% water cut will be implemented in areas under BMC jurisdiction & areas where BMC supplies water from 27 June, 2022," BMC said in a tweet on Saturday.
A release from the BMC also stated that apart from the city and its suburbs, areas falling under neighbouring Thane and Bhiwandi municipal corporations and some villages will also see the 10 per cent cut till water stock improves in the lakes.
In a similar move in August 2020, the BMC had imposed a 20% water cut when no heavy rain activity was seen in the months of June and July.
According to the IMD data, during the June 1 -June 27 period, Mumbai’s Santacruz observatory recorded 230.4-mm rainfall-a shortfall of 226.1mm which is around 46 per cent of the average rainfall for the month. This is completely contrasting with last year's data when June had recorded around 1,000 mm of rainfall with over 200 mm recorded in a 24-hour span in the first week of the month itself.
The IMD, in its five-day forecast, has not indicated any heavy rain activity in the city. However, a yellow alert has been issued for June 29-30, indicating heavy rain at isolated places and moderate rainfall is 'very likely' today (Tuesday).
