Haryana: A prolific thief on a bicycle-stealing spree was stopped in his tracks in Panchkula district of Haryana when police arrested him Wednesday and recovered 62 bicycles. The man, identified as Ravi Kumar, had been living in a rented place in Majri village and operating throughout Panchkula, officials said.
The accused, 32, is believed to be responsible for nearly all of the city’s bicycle thefts of late, according to media reports, and his most recent steal was a cycle worth Rs 15,000, with which he walked away on September 14 in Sector 26.
He was arrested four days later in connection with bicycles reported stolen from Sectors 2,4,7,9,10,11,12,12A, 20, 21, 25 and 26. A remarkable total of 62 bicycles was recovered using surveillance cameras.
“ CCTV footage and cyber technology revealed that the same person was stealing bicycles across Panchkula,” police told Hindustan Times.
Some of these bicycles reportedly cost up to Rs 20,000.
Drug peddler in pedaller’s disguise
Ravi allegedly resold the cycles as cheap as Rs 2,000 and used the money to purchase drugs.
“Ravi had shifted from Ludhiana to Raipur Khurd, Chandigarh, in 2021. He started working at a private firm in Zirakpur,” Sector 26 crime branch in-charge Mohinder Singh said.
However, after losing his job to drug addiction, he moved to Panchkula and began stealing.
