Chandigarh: Farmers in Punjab on Tuesday called off their protests after most of the demands were accepted by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann. Bhartiya Kisan Union (Sidhupur) leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal said most of the farmers' demands had been accepted and they had temporarily suspended their protest.
"We have been assured that the arrears will be cleared by September 7. Our next meeting will be on 7th September," he said.
Chief Minister Mann said all pending dues of sugarcane will be cleared by the government by September 7. He said the state government had decided to cancel the FIRs registered against farmers for stubble burning and agitation.
The chief minister also said that compensation of Rs 5 lakh each to families of farmers who had died during the course of the agitation will be given by August 5.
In a tweet, the chief minister's office said CM Mann accepted most of the genuine demands of farmers' unions after which they agreed to call off their proposed agitation on August 3.
The chief minister said, "arrears of sugarcane cultivators would be released by September 7 and the government is making all-out efforts to make agriculture a profitable venture".
The Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM) - an umbrella group comprising around 40 farm organisations - had earlier announced a 'rail roko' protest across Punjab. The SKM had also announced that it would protest against the Aam Aadmi Party government on August 3 over the non-payment of sugarcane dues and compensation for cotton crop damaged by whitefly.
Jagjit Singh Dallewal had said the farmers would block national highways at three places in Majha, Malwa, and Doaba regions in the state on August 3. However, that protest has now been called off.
