Dengue on the rise

Several parts of India have already reported a rise in a number of dengue cases, an annual ailment that follows monsoon rains, along with other vector-borne diseases like malaria, and chikungunya.
According to Maharashtra health officials, Pune has reported the highest number with nearly 1800 suspected and 213 confirmed cases this year.
Dengue has symptoms like high fever, headache, rash, muscle, and joint pains. The platelet count in dengue goes beyond dangerously low levels when the infection is there.

Dengue complications in young people

Doctors believe that the condition causes various health complications in young people like low BP, liver failure, and even shock syndrome.
A common treatment for dengue apart from medicines for fever and infection is also popularly believed to be the consumption of papaya leaf juice, kiwi, dragon fruit, etc. for increasing the platelet counts. However, doctors term it a myth saying that these remedies are only supplementary and cannot replace treatment with medicines.

Classification of Dengue

The WHO classifies dengue into two major categories – dengue with warning signs and severe dengue. While it is always accompanied by its usual symptoms of fever and body pain, nausea, vomiting, swollen glands, and rashes, in some cases it can worsen with breathlessness, bleeding gums, and nose, liver enlargement, etc.
