India ODI squad news and rumours: New vice-captain set to be named; RCB star to earn maiden ODI call-up

India and South Africa will square off in 3 T20Is and 3 ODIs in September-October. A second-string team led by Shikhar Dhawan will take on Proteas in the 50-over matches. Dhawan might have a new vice-captain for the series while an uncapped player, who plays for Royal Challenger Bangalore in IPL, is likely to be part of the ODI squad.

Shikhar Dhawan is all but set to lead Team India against South Africa.

Team India will be hosting South Africa in 3 T20Is and as many ODIs from September 28 to October 11. While the BCCI announced the squad for the T20I series a couple of weeks back, the fans are still waiting for the ODI team. The first ODI of the series is scheduled to be played on October 6 and an announcement regarding the squad is around the corner.
The first-choice players will leave for T20 World Cup after the T20I series and a second-string team will play the ODI series. Several news reports and rumours have come out before the team selection for the three 50-over matches. Here's a look at some of the important reports -
Shikhar Dhawan to have new vice-captain
As per PTI, Shikhar Dhawan will once again lead the ODI team. He has captained the team in 2 ODI series since 2021 and is gearing up for to perform the leadership duties again. As per ANI, Sanju Samson is likely to be named Dhawan's deputy in three matches.
The wicketkeeper-batsman captained India A to a clean sweep series win against New Zealand A and is likely to get a promotion. Samson leads Rajasthan Royals in IPL. He has played 7 ODIs so far.
RCB star Rajat Patidar likely to earn maiden call-up
As per PTI, Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) batsman Rajat Patidar is likely to get his maiden India call-up for the ODI series. While he was in sublime for India A as well, it was his century in the Eliminator of IPL 2022 that drew the attention of the selectors. He has been unstoppable since then and is highly likely to make his India debut soon.
Players who are certainties
Shubman Gill, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Prasidh Krishna, Kuldeep Yadav, Shardul Thakur and Mohammed Siraj are among the confirmed selections. They weren't in contention to make it to the World Cup squad but are all but confirmed to be part of the ODI team. All these players travelled to Zimbabwe last month.
