Ahmedabad: A day after BJP registered a landslide victory in assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Manipur and Goa, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is now focussing on Gujarat ahead of assembly elections scheduled later this year.
PM Modi embarked on a two-day visit to his home state on Friday. Travelling in an open jeep decorated with flowers, he held a mega roadshow, which started from Ahmedabad airport and will commence at 'Kamalam', the BJP's state headquarters in Gandhinagar.
During the roadshow, thousands of BJP followers gathered at the roadside and chanted "Bharat Mata Ki Jai" slogan. "We have come to welcome Modi ji," said a BJP's follower.
Later in the day, PM Modi will address a rally of elected representatives of panchayat bodies.
"Leaving for Gujarat, where I will be attending various programmes today and tomorrow. At 4 PM today, will address a Panchayat Mahasammelan, where several representatives from Panchayati Raj institutions will attend," PM Modi tweeted.
Modi will also seek blessings from his mother during his visit to Gujarat. Gujarat will go to polls at the end of this year.
On Thursday, the saffron party retained power in four of the five states that went to polls in February-March. BJP and its allies won 273 seats in the 403-member UP Assembly. It bagged 47 in the 70-seat Uttarakhand Assembly, 32 in the 60-seat Manipur Assembly and 20 in 40-member Goa Assembly.
It also managed to increase its vote share in four of the five states, including Punjab where it won only two seats. Uttarakhand is the only state where the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) vote share has declined.
In Uttar Pradesh, the saffron party's vote share went up to 41.8 per cent as against 39.67 per cent in the 2017 Assembly polls, an increase of 2.13 per cent.
In Uttarakhand, the saffron party's vote share declined to 44.3 per cent from 46.5 per cent in 2017.
