Malappuram: Protests broke out in a school in Kerala's Malappuram district amid Independence Day celebrations. The protest march towards the government vocational higher secondary school Keezhooparamba - conducted by a youth league - was prompted by a student dressed up as VD Savarkar for a procession.
The school students had dressed up as various freedom fighters before undertaking a procession from the institution. According to the PTA authorities, one of the pupils had dressed up as Savarkar in spite of the name not being listed as a freedom fighter. The Hindu Mahasabha founder's name had also been pinned to the child's front to clarify who he was impersonating.
The costume had been noticed by other teachers once the children exited the green room and the name card was subsequently removed. The relevant subcommittee has been asked for an explanation from the school authorities.
Following the incident, activists of the Youth Congress and the Youth League--the youth wing of the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML)-- held protest marches towards the Government Vocational Higher Secondary School at Keezhooparamba on Tuesday seeking action against those who dressed the child as Savarkar for the programme.
It was later reported that the student wings of IUML and MSF locked teachers inside the classroom.
The school authorities have not reacted to the controversy. However, photos - purportedly from the green room - have since gone viral on social media and other platforms.
