The Ministry of Railways on Saturday shared images of the proposed design of the New Delhi Railway Station (NDLS), which the government wants to redevelop at par with global standards.
The images of the proposed design shared by the ministry’s handle depict two giant dome-shaped glass structures with the backdrop of what looks like a sci-fi version of New Delhi. The glass domes are seen surrounded by several flyovers, providing access to the station.
While the proposed design may or may not be used, the redevelopment plans of the nation’s busiest railway station are realistic. As part of the NDLS redevelopment project, the Rs 4700-crore redevelopment plan includes revamping the station complex and using the adjoining land for commercial development.
The station complex is proposed to be a six-storey structure with two signature domes. The commercial monetisation and development of the surrounding areas will be a separate exercise, as per reports.
The plan also includes connecting the New Delhi station with Airport Express Line and Yellow Line of the Delhi Metro via multi-modal transit hubs.
The proposed design of the station received mixed reactions from netizens as some hailed the vision and other dubbed the structure as impractical.
“The design looks unrealistic. Glass facades are used in European architecture and are meant to trap heat inside. Regulating temperature inside this structure in sweltering Delhi heat will require air cooling systems, adding to the operational cost,” quipped one Reddit user.
