Prez election: NDA candidate Droupadi Murmu files nomination in presence of PM Modi; dials Sonia and Mamata

The Opposition has fielded former Union minister Yashwant Sinha against Droupadi Murmu. Sinha will be filing his nomination papers on June 27.

New Delhi: Droupadi Murmu, the NDA nominee for the post of President of India in the July 18 election, filed her nomination papers in presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and a host of Union Ministers and BJP MPs and chief ministers on Friday.
PM Modi was Murmu's first proposer, while senior Union Ministers Rajnath Singh, Amit Shah and BJP president JP Nadda were the other signatories on the nomination papers.
BJP Chief ministers Yogi Adityanath, Shivraj Singh Chouhan, Manohar Lal Khattar, B S Bommai, Bhupendra Patel, Himanta Biswa Sarma, Pushkar Singh Dhami, Pramod Sawant and N Biren Singh also graced the event.
If elected to the highest constitutional post, Murmu, will be the first tribal president and the second woman in the post.
After filing the nomination paper, the NDA presidential nominee called up Congress president Sonia Gandhi, NCP's Sharad Pawar and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, and sought their support for her candidature.
Before filing her nomination papers, the NDA’s presidential nominee arrived at the Parliament and paid tributes to the statues of Mahatma Gandhi, Dr BR Ambedkar and Birsa Munda at the Parliament.
She reached the national capital from Odisha on Thursday and met Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Ministers Amit Shah and Rajnath Singh and BJP president JP Nadda.
Besides, the NDA partners, including Nitish Kumar's Janata Dal (United), Odisha Chief Minister and BJD president Naveen Patnaik, The YSR Congress led by Jagan Mohan Reddy has also announced its support to the candidature of Murmu.
Jharkhand Mukti Morcha, which is running a coalition government with Congress in Jharkhand, is also expected to support the candidature of NDA's nominee for the post of President of India.
The NDA presidential candidate Droupadi Murmu has sought cooperation from everyone for the upcoming election and will kickstart her campaign from June 25 to seek support from the political parties to help her be elected as the first person of the country.
In a tweet, Modi on Thursday said, "Met Droupadi Murmu Ji. Her Presidential nomination has been appreciated across India by all sections of society. Her understanding of grassroots problems and vision for India's development is outstanding."
The Opposition has fielded former Union minister Yashwant Sinha against Murmu. Sinha will be filing his nomination papers on June 27.
Senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh had announced Sinha's candidature on June 21 on behalf of the Opposition parties.
