New Delhi: The Standing Committees for both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha are set to be reconstituted soon. The main Opposition party Congress is likely to lose out on several committees including the Standing Committee for Communications and Information Technology. It was chaired by Congress leader and currently party presidential post contender Shashi Tharoor.
The chairmanship of the Committee is likely to go to the new National Democratic Alliance (NDA) partner, the Eknath Shinde faction of Shiv Sena, news agency ANI reported quoting sources. As per sources, the party has proposed to nominate the name of MP Prataprao Jadhav for the same. Jadhav is Lok Sabha MP from the Buldhana constituency in Maharashtra.
"Our party has been offered the chairmanship of the IT committee and after consultation with top leaders, we have decided to nominate Jadhav," sources from the Shiv Sena added.
On the other hand, several opposition MPs including Karti Chidambaram, John Brittas and others had written to Lok Sabha Speaker, Om Birla, requesting Tharoor continue as the chairman of the IT panel.
Congress Lok Sabha MP from Thiruvananthapuram, Shashi Tharoor was appointed as the chairman of the Committee for Communications and Information Technology by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla in September 2019. He was reappointed to the post in September 2021 through a voice vote despite objections from several BJP MPs.
Notably, the ruling BJP MPs and Opposition MPs have been at loggerheads over the said committee for quite some time. Another member of the IT panel, BJP MP from Godda constituency in Jharkhand, Nishikant Dubey has, time and again, asked for the removal of Tharoor citing his 'personal party-driven agenda.' Not only this but he had also moved a couple of breach of Privilege Motions against him.
